I like bead chains in particular because they don't have a tendency to swirl your hair up! I know babies tend to yank jewelry off of their mothers, so this necklace should be worn underneath your clothing if you're holding your baby.
To clean, I would just use a sterling silver treated cleaning cloth to remove excess tarnish. Or, if it's really tarnished pour boiling water in a tinfoil-lined dish, add a teaspoon of baking soda and place the necklace in. The chemical reaction will remove the toughest of tarnish. I know because I worked at a silver jewelry shop in high school. It's a very handy trick, and works!
